The Changing Faces of Helm Crag
Wainwright wrote of it that, “The virtues of Helm Crag have not been lauded enough. It gives an exhilarating climb … and, in a region where all is beautiful, it makes a notable contribution to the natural charms and attractions of Grasmere.”
It's the summit that draws the attention. Depending on your viewpoint the outcrops are said to resemble a lion and lamb, an 'old lady playing the organ' or 'the Howitzer'. You've just over 1300 feet of climb to spot all three.
Climbing Helm Crag
Setting out from our Grasmere hotel your walk to the summit of Helm Crag and back should take a good half day to a day. The climb isn’t too arduous but it is unsuitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs and you should opt for robust footwear and sensible clothing.
The total journey is just over 6 miles. Time it just right and the circular route should bring you back to the Gold Rill in time for a refreshing afternoon tea. Then, over a hearty evening meal amidst the grandeur of the Lakeland Fells, you can decide which climb you'll tackle tomorrow…
