At the Heart of British Poetry
Dove Cottage’s place in history is assured not just because I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud (or ‘Daffodils’ as it is fondly known) was written there. It has been said that no other home in Britain has seen so much of the thought and creativity that has shaped our country’s poetry.
Between 1799 and 1808 Dove Cottage saw visits from Sir Walter Scott, Thomas de Quincey (who later owned the cottage) and, most frequently, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Wordsworth’s good friend and creator of The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner.
